John Walter William (Billy) Volckens, 69, of Durham, passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2015. He was born to the late William and Katharine Volckens oneebruary 19, 1946 in Evanston, IL. Billy graduated from New Trier High School in 1964 where he was captain of the swim team. He received a BA in English from the Uneersity of Evansville in 1968. Billy married Susaneeaton in 1970, and they lived together in Winnetka, IL, before relocating to Durham in 2005. Billy worked as a salesman and stockbroker in Chicago. He was an active member of the local community theater and a devoted Sunday school teacher and choir member at Christ Church of Winnetka. Known for his bowties, Billy loved fireworks, Frisbee golf, and above all his family. Billy is survived by his wife Susie and four children: Peter Volckens (Alison) of Charlotte, NC; John Volckens (Amy) of Fort Collins, CO; Aneew Volckens (Sonia) of San Francisco, CA; Katharine Lew (Alex) of Chicago, IL. He is also survived by his mother-in-law (Joan Winston), five grandchildren (with a sixth due in April), and 11 nieces and nephews. He also leaves three siblings: Fredricka Kimball (Kim); Pauline Rothberg (Randall); and Robert Volckens (Julie). A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew???s Episcopal Church in Hillsborough (210 St. Mary???s Road). Private burial will take place this summer in Harbor Springs, Michigan. Memorial donations in Billy???s nee canee made to Little Traverse Nature Conservancy (3264 Powell Road, Harbor Springs, Michigan 49740).
