John William Pope, age 79, died Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Duke Medical Center. John was born on October 29, 1933 in Queens Village, NY to the late John W. and Pearl Bardeneein Pope. He and his wife, Gerry, retired to Durham in 1998 to be closer to their daughter and her family. He was an active member of St. Matthew Catholic Church in Durham and a member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree. A mentor to many young men, John was deeply involved with the Scouting community ineew York and Durham for more than 60 years. He held neerous positions in Boy Scouting including: Scoutmaster of several troops; District Commissioner; and member of the Sagamore Adult Service Troop in Long Island, NY. John had been active in the Fifty Plus Club at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Durham and served as president for the past eight years. John is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Gerry Pope of Durham; his daughter, Gerry Pope Young and husband, Chris, also of Durham; and two grandchildren, Caroline and Christopher. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at St. Matthew Catholic Church by Reverend Thanh Nguyen. Burial will follow in St. Matthew Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service in Durham.
