Johnston "J" Fred Colvard, Jr., 80, of Durham, died Monday, February 15, 2010, at the hospice facility at the Meadowlands of Hillsborough after an extended illness. Mr. Colvard was born to the late Lois Proctor Colvard and J. Fred Colvard. He was a graduate of Durham High School and the Uneersity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a member of Chi Psi social fraternity and Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He worked for his father at Colvard Farm Equipment Company until his father's death and then took over the company, which he later reneed Colvard Outdoor Equipment Company. He was a member of First Baptist Church and was very active in the Seekers Sunday School Class. "J" was a Boy Scout in WV and served as a Pack Master for Pack 499 in Durham. He and his wife, Jerry, enjoyed square dancing with the Square'em Up club for many years. "J" is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jerrell "Jerry" Cates Colvard; two sons, David Colvard of Raleigh and Doug Colvard of McLean, Virginia; one daughter, Nancy Frantel of Midlothian, Virginia; four grandsons, Daniel, Christopher, Alex, Dane Johnston "DJ"; and two granddaughters, Stacy and Valerie. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service. Funeral services will be offered 10 a.m., Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Hall Wynne Funeral Chapel, 1113 West Main Street, Durham, NC. Burial will follow Woodlawneemorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to North Carolina Botanical Gardens in Chapel Hill, Durham Rescue Mission, Baptist Children's Homes of North Carolina in Thomasville, Occoneechee Council of the Boy Scouts of America, or the Salvation Army of Durham.
