Joseph Wayne Gooch, known to all as Joe, age 95, died on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at Universal Healthcare. He was the son of the late Robert Jule Gooch and Emma Pearl King Gooch.  Joe was born in Granville County on June 29, 1926. 

Joe attended Stem High School and was a lifelong resident of Stem and carried that honor proudly. He met and married Elizabeth Royster Gooch on June 26, 1964, raised a family and he retired as a tobacco farmer. Joe served as a commissioner on the Town of Stem Board for a number of years. He was an active member of Stem United Methodist Church and he held various offices including Sunday school superintendent and trustee

Joe is survived by his children, Harry Wayne Gooch and Elisa Gooch Strickland (Scott); his granddaughter, Kristin Strickland Yancey (Adam); great granddaughter, Reese Elizabeth Yancey and Mary Lewis Bowling, special friend.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 35 years, Elizabeth Gooch.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, May 20, 2022, at 6:00 pm -7:30 pm at Gentry-Newell and Vaughan Funeral Home, Oxford, NC. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 11:00 am at Stem United Methodist Church and will be officiated by Reverend Norma Roberts. Burial to follow at Bullock Cemetery, Stem, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his honor to Stem United Methodist Church.
