Wilmingtoneenneth Winston Cherry left us to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 9, 2016, where he was residing with his loving children in Wilmington, NC. He was 63 years young. Kenneth was born in Durham, NC on October 16, 1952, to Morris Lynwood Cherry, Sr. and Mary Lucy Williams Cherry. He spent his childhood and youth in Durham. He graduated from Durham High School, where he played football, which was one of his loves. He later went to Lees-McRae College, where he continued to play football, until he incurred a knee injury that prevented him from playing any more. He then attended to North Carolina State Uneersity, which held a special place in his heart. He was a diehard Wolfpack fan his entire life. Oneeptember 15, 1979, he was married to Janet Elaine Clark, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. They were the proud parents of three children. He resided there until 2014, whenee moved to the place he loved, his family farm in Granville County. He lived there until recently, whenee came to Wilmington in July of 2016, for the birth of his first grandchild, where he stayed until he said goodbye to his loved ones. Kenneth was first employed at his family???s seafood restaurant, the Breezeway, at Topsail Beach, a place that he loved. He theneegan a career in Insurance as the Medical Underwriter for Mid-South Insurance Company in Fayetteville, which he dedicated himself to for twenty years. Since that time, he continued to work in the insurance industry on the sales side. Everyone that knew Kenneth knew that he liked to play hard and work harder. He was an avid surfer, aneenjoyed fishing and spending time at the beach. He also loved to hunt on his farm and work tirelessly, putting much blood and sweat into the place he loved. Kenneth is survived by his mother, Mary Lucy Cherry, of Durham, three brothers, Morris Lynwood Cherry, Jr. and wife. Manuela, and Dr. Michael R. Cherry and wife, Pamela, of Durham, and William David Cherry and wife, Kathy, of Topsail Beach, and one sister, Patricia Cherry Ketchum and husband, Rick, of Hampstead, NC,. He is survived by his three children, two daughters, Michelle Cherry Powell, and her husband, Jackson Slater Powell, of Hampstead, and Melissa Cherry Rock, and her husband, John David Rock, Jr. of Wilmington, one son, Kenneth Clark Cherry, of Wilmington, and one grandchild, Valyn Olivia Powell. He is also survived by neerous unees, cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Kenneth was preceded ineeath by his father, Morris Lynwood Cherry, Sr. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 12 at Hall Wynne Funeral Home 1113 W. Main St. Durham, from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral service will be held at Watts Street Baptist Church, 800 Watts St, Durham, at 11 am on Saturday, August 13. Burial will be at Maplewood Cemetery, 1621 Duke Uneersity Road, Durham, immediately following the funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations canee made to The National Leiomyosarcoma Foundation (nlmsf.org) ineemory of Kenneth W. Cherry.
