OXFORD: Laura Newby Burnette, age 97, of Oxford, died at Uneersal Health Care on Tuesday, September 10, 2013. A native of Granville County, she was the wife of the late Fenton A. Burnette and the daughter of t William Newby and Jenee Keeton, both deceased. Laura retired from, Granville Manufacturing Company after more than 30 years of service. For many years she followed her love for cooking and sewing until she was 93 years and her health would not let her continue. Until her death, she was the oldest living graduate of Stovall High School and the oldest member of Salem Uneed Methodist Church. Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Burnette O'Brien Charles of Orlando, Florida; son Bill Burnette Nancy of Oxford, 5 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded ineeath by her 9 siblings, Virginia Newby O'Flanagan, Cora Anneewby Henderson, Willie Newby, Marvineewby, Nell Newby Currin, Raymond Newby, Ollie Newby, Eloise Newby Cash and Lucy Newby Jones. Funeral services will be conducted at Gentry-neell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford on Saturday, September 14 at 2:00 PM by Reverend Glenn Stallsmith with the family receiving friends from 12:30 until 2:00 PM prior to the service. Burial will follow at Meadowview Memorial Park. At other times the family will be at the home of her son, Bill Burnette and wife Nancy, 404 Harris Street, Oxford, NC.
