Lois Mary Bryant Hedgepeth

DURHAM-Lois Mary Fuhrman Bryant Hedgepeth died December 25, 2014. She was born in Maytown, PA the daughter of the late Mary Jane Brooks Fuhrman and William Hershey Fuhrman. Lois is survived by her husband Bill Hedgepeth, many relatives and friends. Prior to her retirement, she taught first grade in Manheim Township Schools, Penna first grade in Gunnison, Colorado; emotionally handicapped in Colorado; first grade in Durham City Schools; Elementary Gifted Education in Durham City Schools; first grade at Durham Academy; librarian, Durham Academy; Lower School Director and Director of Counseling at Durham Academy and was a second grade teacher in Durham Public Schools. Lois received grants and honors during her 43 year career. She helped to develop Mr. Ed ??? The Talking Bear through Title II Project Grant 1976. She received neerous awards including, Outstanding Youneeducator, Durham Jaycees Award, NC representative for Career Opportunity Federal Grant Program, Outstandineelementary Teacher of America, President of the Alpha Kappa Delta sorority, Teacher of the Year, NC Professional Review Committee and developed the first grade science curriculum under a Sarah Graham Kenan Grant. Lois was a member of OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) at Duke where she enjoyed taking many courses. She also loved to read, cook, paint, dance, garden and travel. She was a member of the coneegation at Duke Uneersity Chapel. A memorial service will be held 2:00pm Sunday, January 4, 2015 in the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 W. Main Street, Durham, NC 27701. The Rev. Dr. Carol Gregg will officiate.
