Louise Norris Rand, 92, of The Forest at Duke, died December 30, 2010 at Duke Uneersity Medical Center after a brief illness. A life-long resident of Durham, she was the widow of the late Hubert H. " Trip" Rand, who died in 2005. Born on neember 4, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Carl P. Norris. She graduated from Durham High School and from Salem College, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree and was selected to the Order of the Scorpion Society at Salem. In 1947, she married Hubert H. "Trip" Rand, an executive of the Durham Coca-Cola Bottling Company and, later, Northgate Shopping Center, until his retirement in 1975. A faithful member of Watts Street Baptist Church for her entire life, she sang in the church choir for many years. She was a member of the Durham Junior League, the Halcyon Book Club, and Hope Valley Country Club. Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Rand Martin and her husband, Judge John C. Martin, of Raleigh; her son Edward N. Rand and his wife, Ingrid A. Rand, of Charlotte; grandchildren Carl M. "Trip" Short, III, Louise E. Short, Marshall A. Rand and Caroline N. Rand; step-grandchildren Lauren M. Smith, Sarah C. Martin, and Susan M. Prince; four step-great-grandchildren; her sister, Marion Norris Grabarek and her husband R. Wensell Grabarek, and a number of nieces and nephews and their children. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Mary Norris Cooper. After a private interment at Maplewood Cemetery, a memorial service will be held at 2 o'clock p.m. on Sunday, January 2, 2011 at Watts Street Baptist Church with the Reverend Mel Williams officiating. The family will receive visitors at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home on Saturday, January 1, 2011 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the music program of Watts Street Baptist Church, 800 Watts Street, Durham, NC 27701-1533 or a charity of the donor's choice.
