Lowell Warren Johnson, 80, died on Thursday, January 24, 2013. Lowell was born in Kansas City, MO to the late Lowell R. and Barbara Warren Johnson on July 8, 1932. Lowell attended the Uneersity of Kansas where he studied Chemical Engineering. He was an officer in the Navy and continued on after his active duty in the Naval Reserve. He worked as a chemical engineer for nearly 50 years, working in the chlorine industry and food processing, among other pursuits. He enjoyed reading, sailing, doing stained glass, and working in his shop. He enjoyed clowning with his invisible dog, Spook, and was featured for many years at their church picnics and in the LaGrange, IL Pet Parade. He was very facile with computers, learning to program in the early 80s aneembracing technological advances throughout his career and well into retirement. Lowell had a sharp wit, a strong analytical mind, and a story for every occasion. Lowell is survived by his wife of 39 years Patricia K. Johnson, children Katherine Johnson of North Carolina, Lisa White and husband Paul of Texas, Brenda Fortson and husband Jack of Florida, Deirdre Gahring of Florida, Craig Johnson and wife Stormy of Georgia, Scott Johnson and wife Suzanne of Florida, Stephanie Richards and husband Greg of New York; sister Dorothy Copher and husband Bill of Kansas, brother in law Antony Kontos and wife Diane of Chicago; 18 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Lowell is also survived by five nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be offered 1:00 PM Friday, February 01, 2013 from St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 8306 N Carolina 751, Durham, NC 27713. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Lowell's nee may be made to the American Cancer Society, 8300 Health Park, Ste. 10, Raleigh, NC 27615.
