LTC Raymond Michael HobineeT, 78, died on Sunday, January 27, 2013. Raymond Ray was born ineeaneck, NJ, to the late Raymond Martin and Lillian Fair Hobin on January 14, 1935. Mr. Hobin's life was a distinguished one of dedicated public service. The son of a New York law enforcement officer and an only child, Ray graduated from St. Peter's College with a B.S. in Biology with initial plans to teach school. However, while in college, he became commissioned as an Army Signal officer, and shortly after his best friend introduced him to Anne Marie Laplante, who he took as his beloved bride oneecember 22, 1956. Ray theneegan his required military obligation of four years, which led to a distinguished career in the Army of 20 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel with many Army decorations including a Meritorious Service medal and a Joint Service Commendationeedal. LTC Hobin attended foreign language school in Monterrey, CA, early in his career, and was fluent in Latin, German, Arabic and some Vietneese. Other post assignments included Ft. Riley, Kansas, Camp Zama, Japan, Saigon, Vietnam, Arlington Hall, Washington DC, NCNG at the Durham Armory and culminating at Ft. Monee, VA, with TRADOC as a project officer. Ray and Anne had two children, Diana and Patrick. Upon his retirement from the Army, Mr. Hobin and his family returned to Durham where he enrolled in law school at North Carolina Central Uneersity at the age of 48. He completed his juris doctorate degree in 1986. As an attorney, LTC Hobineent to work as a public defender in Durham, working from an office rented from Upchurch and Galifinakis. Eventually, he retired and returned to his boyhood and family love of trains, setting up a model RR traineepair business. He was published in neerous model train publications and well regarded for his knowledge and work in model trains. LTC Hobin was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Durham for 41 years, where he served as a Eucharistic minister. He also served as a Eucharistic minister to veterans at the Durham VA Medical Center during his retirement. Ray was a devoted husband, being married to his lifelong love, Anne Marie, for 56 years. He loved aneenjoyed his grandchildren aneespecially loved sharing his love of trains and military history with them. He will be dearly missed by his family. Raymond is survived by his wife Anne Marie Laplante Hobin of Durham, NC; daughter Diana Hobin Shoaf and husband Dr. James Jim Shoaf of Durham, NC; son LTC Patrick R. Hobin and wife Alice Brineey Hobin of Fuquay Varina, NC; grandchildren Michael, Karen, Hannah, Alexandra Aleii and Caroline. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered 10:00 am Friday, February 1, 2013 from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 810 West Chapel Hill Street, Durham, NC 27701 with Fr. Bill McIntyre, OFM, presiding. A rite of Christian burial with full military honors will follow at 2:00 pm at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake, NC. Friends may visit from 6:00 8:00pm on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 West Main Street, Durham, NC 27701.
