Oxford Lucy Taylor Fort, 88, died peacefully at home on Saturday, April 28, 2018.?? Lucy was born in 1929 in Oxford, NC, daughter of the late Charles Davisson Hayes Fort and Idie Kerr Taylor Fort.?? She attended Oxford High School and graduated in 1947 as class Salutatorian.?? She theneent to Richmond, VA aneentered the Stuart Circle Hospital and School for Nurses.?? After graduating from the nursing program in Richmond in 1950, Lucy worked at the hospital for a year and theneeturned to NC to work at the VA Hospital in Durham.?? In 1956, Lucy moved to Chapel Hill to continue her nursineeducation at the UNC School of Nursing.?? After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1958 and a Masters degree in 1965 at UNC???Chapel Hill, she began a busy and productive career teaching at the UNC School of Nursing and working in the cardiac care unit at the UNC Hospital.?? Lucy always reached out to help others and to care for those ineeed.?? She joined the South Orange Rescue Squad in 1971 and helped on many calls with the squad through the years. Lucy was a member of The Chapel of the Cross Episcopal church in Chapel Hill for more than 60 years serving on various committees and always wanting to minister to others in the church and in the community.?? She worked on the annual ABC Sale for years and helped organee aneestablish The Good Samaritan Guild. Lucy loved nothing more than spending time with family and friends.?? She enjoyed trips to the beach with friends, getting together with family at Christmas and being with others for importaneevents in their lives.?? She also loved her Siamese cats, working ineer garden and supporting and attending UNC football and basketball games. Lucy is preceded ineeath by her parents and her younger brother, Arch Fort and is survived by her older brother, David Fort, nieces Elizabeth Reynolds, Lisa Cloninger and Carol Fort, and nephews Gene Fort and Ken Fort. A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Elmwood Cemetery, Oxford, NC at 2:00 pm.?? Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer???s Association.
