Duke (Lyle) Henthorne of Chapel Hill, NC died on Tuesday, July 12, 2022. Duke was born on June 19, 1936, in La Crosse Wisconsin to parents Bernal and Thelma (Halverson) Henthorn (deceased). Duke was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years Phyllis (Weaver), infant sister, Dolores, and grandson, Michael Patrick Henthorne.
Duke is survived by sons Michael Henthorne and Alane Bartlett of New Richmond Wisconsin, Patrick and wife Linda of Dublin, Ohio, and granddaughter Noelle and husband Andrew Maginity of Denver, Colorado. Also surviving are sisters: Carolyn Schoenfeld and husband Ray; Marilyn Moll and husband Russ; Linda Kinstler and husband Paul; Debra Henthorn and John Friemel; brothers: Donald and wife Joyce; Wayne and wife Carol; and Richard. Sisters and brothers-in-law: Mary Ann Knothe, Carrol Herried, Kathy Weaver-Karras, Patti Weaver, Jane Rendler, and husband James; and Kelly Weaver; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Duke’s career life with Trane Company, American Standard, and Nortel Networks involved extensive global travel, which was well suited to his curiosity and adventurous spirit. His career also involved four relocations for his family, the last to Chapel Hill, where he and Phyllis happily retired. He was always involved in community activities, serving on the Chapel Hill Public Library Foundation, the North Carolina Botanical Garden Foundation and PORCH (Food for Families program).
Duke welcomed and delighted in each new day. He lived life with a grand sense of humor and shared it with all who knew him. He was the ultimate host that knew the most unassuming places to eat with seriously good food. He loved his family, was a caring husband, proud father, and grandfather. His most treasured role was ‘Grandpa Duke’ to his grandson. It would be his wish to leave behind fond memories, fun stories, smiles, and reflections of happy times.
We will celebrate Duke’s life on August 5th, 2022, at 10:00am with a Funeral Mass at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church, 943 Carmichael Street, Chapel Hill. Virtual streaming will be available for those unable to attend in person. In lieu of flowers, Duke requested family and friends consider gifts to a charity of their choice.
The Henthorne family is under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service. Online condolences: www.hallwynne.com – select obituaries.
