DURHAM: Margaret Francis Hurst, 87, died Wednesday at Hock Pavilion after recent years of declining health. She was born in Durham May 20, 1929 to the late William B. and Louise (Brown) Francis. Margaret attended Durham schools and graduated from Durham High School. She spent her entire career in banking and retired from Wachovia at age 62. Margaret was married for 65 years to Ralph R. Hurst until his death in 2014. A devoted churchwoman, she was a longtime member of Asbury Uneed Methodist Church and the Ralph Mitchell Sunday School class. Margaret was known for her strong character, dedication to work, high energy and deep caring of others. Margaret and Ralph enjoyed a wonderful marriage, sharing their love of family, church, travel and yard work. Surviving are her children, Teresa Knight and husband, John, of Durham, and Durwood Hurst and wife, Marsha, of Calabash, NC; 3 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and her brother, Robert M. Francis of Ft. Washington, MD. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her siblings, William B. Francis, Jr., Marvin ???Skeeter??? Francis and Martha F. Brown. The funeral will be 1:00 PM Monday from Asbury Uneed Methodist Church, with the Rev. Alice Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church parlor from 12:00 until time of service. Memorial donations may be made to Asbury Church, 806 Clarendon St. Durham 27705.
