Marion Douglas Sands, age 95, died peacefully on Sunday, October 30th, 2011 at The Meadowlands surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Orange County to the late James and Rosa Strayhorn Douglas oneecember 26, 1915. She graduated from Durham High School and Croft Business College, and later married Thomas Joseph Sands ineecember 1943. Marion worked as the Head of Collections at Watts Hospital for over 30 years. During that time, she was a member of many professional organizations, most notably the Business and Professional Women's Association. She voluneered with couneess organizations, including the Eno River Association, where she was recogneed with the Voluneer of the Year Award. Marion was a member of the McMannen Uneed Methodist Church since the age of 13 and was instrumental ineeading up neerous committees there. Her dedication to voluneerineextended to Meals on Wheels, supporting the County Commissioner and her church family. Marion loved sharing stories of family history, the North Carolina countryside and cooking big meals for family and friends. Most of all, Marion was a beloved mother and grandmother, always placing others first and immensely dedicated to her family and to her grandchildren. Marion is survived by her four children: Margaret Sands Wilson of Fredericksburg, VA; John Michael Sands and wife, Marie; Jane Winifred Sands; and Joseph Wilson Sands and wife, Cyndy, all of Durham; four grandchildren, Amy Sands Ernenwein, Thomas Joseph Wilson, Meaghan Shields Wilson and Sgt. John Michael Sands II, USMC; two great grandchildren, William Michael Ernenwein and Connor Douglas Sands. She was preceded ineeath by her husband, Thomas Joseph Sands. Graveside services will be held oneednesday, neember 2nd at 11am at McMannen Uneed Methodist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Wilbur Jackson presiding. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, neember 1st from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Durham and following the graveside service in McManneneellowship Hall, and other times at the home of John Sands.
