Mark Curtis Watson

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mark Curtis Watson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Mark departed this world on March 7, 2025, at the age of 63, in his hometown of Oxford, North Carolina, where he was born on December 18, 1961 to his late parents, Austin Taylor Watson and Peggy Lou Smith Watson.

Mark lived a life filled with laughter, love, and a deep devotion to his family. He is survived by his cherished wife of 35 years, Bonnie Cottrell Watson, who was not only his partner but also his best friend throughout their wonderful journey together. Their enduring love was a testament to their commitment and respect for each other, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew them.

Mark was a very proud father to his son, Andrew David Watson and cherished father-in-law to Andrew’s wife, Caroline Watson. His precious granddaughter, Jillian Drew Watson, brought unparalleled joy to his life. Time spent with Jillian was the highlight of his days, as he cherished every moment watching her grow and flourish.

In addition to his immediate family, Mark leaves behind his beloved brothers, Gary Taylor Watson (Gaylene) and Glenn Carl Watson (Joan Callahan). The bond shared among the Watson brothers was unbreakable, filled with shared memories and brotherly love that will continue to resonate in their hearts.

Mark was not only known for his love of family but also for his fierce spirit and zest for life. A talented high school athlete, he was particularly noted for his skills in baseball, earning scholarships to both Elon College and Louisburg College. This passion for sports exemplified his commitment and determination, qualities that followed him through life.

In his professional life, Mark found fulfillment as a truck driver. He began his truck driving career working with UPS in 1985. After 27 years, he began driving for Sheetz/CLI Transport and has done this for the past 13 years. His work was more than a job; it was an opportunity for him to meet new people and share stories, always accompanied by his infectious smile and charismatic personality.

Outside of work, Mark had a wide range of hobbies and interests. He had a profound love for music, always ready to share a favorite song or dance to the rhythm of life. However, his greatest joy came from spending time with his family, friends and his two loyal dogs who he absolutely adored, Sadie and Lexie as well as his very special granddog, Shep. Mark’s home was filled with laughter, kindness, and the warmth of family, a legacy that will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.

Mark's sunny disposition was a beacon for many, characterized by his ever-present smile, quick wit, and charming nature. He had an innate ability to uplift those around him, and his humorous anecdotes and heartfelt laughter will be missed dearly by friends and family alike.

Despite the sorrow that accompanies his passing, the celebration of his remarkable life will take place on March 12, 2025, at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home, 503 College St. Oxford, NC. Friends and family are invited to gather for a Celebration of Life from 11:00 am with a visitation held directly after. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mark's memory to the Wounded Warrior Project or to the Granville County Animal Shelter, both of which reflect his generous spirit and love for others.
