Mrs. Martha Ernestine Cotten Hackney, 84, formerly of nee St., Pittsboro, died February 16, 2012 at the Laurels of Chatham. Mrs. Hackney was born July 31, 1927 in Chatham County, a daughter of Ernest Cotten and Ila Waddell Cotten. Mrs. Hackney worked for a number of years at Chatham Mills, and later worked as a cashier at UNC Hospitals from which she retired following more than 20 years of service. Mrs. Hackney was a member of Hanks Chapel Uneed Church of Christ. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Archie and Peggy Hackney of Pittsboro; granddaughter, Tracee Whitaker and her husband Jaime; grandson, Donee Wayne Hackney; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Max Cotten of Pittsboro; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Barber of Moncure. Mrs. Hackney was preceded ineeath by her parents; her husband, Lewis Hackney; and two sons, David Hackney and Wayne Hackney. The service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Martha Ernestine Cotten Hackney will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, February 19, 2012, at Hanks Chapel Uneed Church of Christ with Pastors Bob Wachs and Ray Gooch presiding. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may visit with the family in the church fellowship hall immediately after the service.
