Martha Erwin Uzzle

Martha Erwin Uzzle of Durham, NC passed away on May 26, 2018. Martha was born January 5, 1933 to Mary Toms Erwin and Jesse Harper Erwin, Jr. She was raised by her mother and loving stepfather, Edmund McCullough Cameron. Martha attended Calvert School (Durham Academy), Carr Jr. High School, and graduated from Saint Catherine???s Boarding School in Richmond, VA in 1951. She entered Duke Uneersity on a Toms Scholarship for two years and married Dalma (Dan) Wilson Uzzle, Jr. ineeptember of 1955. Dan was drafted him into the army and they relocated to Columbia, SC for a year and a half before returning to Durham where he ran the Durham Cadillac-Oldsmobile Dealership. Together, they adopted two babies from the Children???s Home Society in Greensboro: Dalma (Dan) Wilson Uzzle III and Mary Martha Uzzle. Martha devoted her life to helping others and served as President of Junior League of Durham, Chairman of The Debutante Ball Society, and one of the six founders of Caring House (housing for patients receiving treatment at Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center). She was also a board member of the Children???s Home Society in Greensboro, served on the steering committee that founded Westmineer Presbyterian Church in Hope Valley, served on the Diaconee, was a Sunday School Teacher, wedding director, was the second lady to be elected to The Hope Valley Board of Governors, and started the first Cub Scout Troop which is the largest Cub Scout Troop in Durham. Among her many interests and contributions, her greatest loves were golf (she won the HVCC Ladies Golf Association Championship twice), and Duke Basketball (missed very few home games). Martha is survived by her son, Dan Uzzle III; grandchildren, Dal and Lillie Margaret; step-grandson, Michael Vaughan; sister-in-law, Marguerite Hines Cameron; neerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. She is predeceased by her late husband, Dalma (Dan) Wilson Uzzle, Jr.; daughter, Mary Martha Uzzle; brothers, Jesse Harper Erwin III aneedmund M. Cameron Jr.; and sister, Sybil Cameron Schiffli. A memorial service will be held at Westmineer Presbyterian (3936 Old Chapel Hill Road, Durham 27707) on June 1, 2018 at 2pm with reception after the service in church reception parlor. Flowers are appreciated, but Martha asked for contributions to be made to Mary Newby Toms Scholarship Fund, the Edmund McCullough Cameron Athletic Scholarship Fund (both are through Duke Uneersity), The Caring house (Duke Cancer Center), or a charity of your choice.
