Mary Alice Shaver

b. April 9, 1938

Dr. Mary Alice Shaver, an educator and scholar in advertising and mass communication, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, at her home ineearrington Village, North Carolina after a brief illness. She was 74. She spent many years on the faculty at the Uneersity of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, served as director of the Advertising Department and Michigan State Uneersity, chair of theNicholson School of Communication at the Uneersity of Central Florida and was most recently the Hamrin Professor of Media Maneement in the Media Maneement and Transformationeenee of the Jonkoping International Business School in Jonkoping, Sweden. She served as president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and as president of the American Academy of Advertising. Dr. Shaver earned her Bachelor's degree in 1959 from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana, her Master of Science in 1973 from the Uneersity of Illinois and her Ph.D. in 1984 from Indiana Uneersity. She had a lifelong passion for Labrador retrievers and showed her dogs ineeveral states, most recently at the 2012 Potomac Labrador Retriever Specialty show in Frederick, Md., where Mikasi Good Samaritan Sam earned his Therapy Dog International certification. She and Sam visited residents of Galloway Ridge, an assisted living facility near their home ineearrington, several times a week until her final illness. She was also active in Women of Fearrington. Mary Alice Lerch was born on April 9, 1938 in Chicago to Alice Sheehaneerch and Charles Henry Lerch. Mary Alice, an only child, grew up in Evanston, Ill. She is survived by her husband, Dr.Daniel L. Shaver; her children--Jeanne Sentman GriswoldClay of Orlando, Fla.; Dr. Charles L. Sentman Mia, of Lebanon, N.H.; aneerica Shaver of Charlotte, N.C.--and four granddaughters: Allison Griswold and Sarah, Julie and Kaisa Sentman.
