Mary Elizabeth “Libby” Peele Currin, 91, of Oxford, NC passed away peacefully at her home on August 18, 2024, surrounded by her three loving children. Born on September 6, 1932, in South Boston, VA, she was the daughter of Mack Roy Peele Sr. and Mary Pauline Cuthrell Peele.
Libby was a 1953 graduate of Rex Hospital School of Nursing. After graduation, Libby married her high school sweetheart, Royal Taylor “Bill” Currin. She was employed as a registered nurse at Rex Hospital, Granville Medical Center, and the offices of Dr. L.S. Daniel and Dr. Mike Mahan. She was devoted to her profession for 40 years before retiring in 1993. During retirement, she enjoyed gardening; extended beach trips with Bill and family to their home in Surfside Beach, SC; her beloved Boston Terriers (Lady Bird and Bryce); and spending time with her seven grandchildren. She was a member of Oxford Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and Mission Friends for numerous years.
Libby is survived by her son, Dr. Robert Currin (Sharon); her two daughters, Susan Hill (Mike) and Lisa Burton (Terry); seven grandchildren, Mia B. Turner (Ryan), Meredith Currin (Matt Faucette), Mallory B. Lumpkins (Seth), Leslie C. Durham (Alex), Elizabeth H. Downing (Michael), Taylor Currin (Shannon Powers), and Hagan Hill; three great-grandchildren, Mary Owen Lumpkins, James David Lumpkins, and Robert “Currin” Durham. She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Bill; her two brothers, Mack Roy Peele Jr. and Julian Peele; and her three sisters, Adele Hanks, Margaret Harvey, and Alice Currin.
The family would like to thank her special caregivers for all of their love, care, and support throughout the years.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Oxford Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Brett Pardue. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the Family Life Center. The family will receive friends at her home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Oxford Baptist Church Children’s Building Renovation Fund or the Oxford Baptist Church Columbarium Fund.
