Michael Carey Clendenin, 83 Clendenin, Michael C. -- Chapel Hill, NC -- Beloved husband of Joan (June) Marie Sorrell; father of Kathleen (husband Robert Furlong), Michael (wife Lynn Pagano), Christine (husband Richard Kolosky), Jeanne (husband Daniel Sweeney) and Thomas (wife Ann-Marie Albrecht); and 16 grandchildren; brother of Brian (wife Eloise Wender) and late William; brother-in-law of Fred and Patricia Ipavich. Born October 4, 1934 in Richmond, Indiana, he led a highly successful journalism and public relations career spanning more than four decades in Washington, D.C. and New York City. He began his professional career in 1951 at the age of 16 as a copy boy in the Washington, D.C. office of the NY Daily News, learning reporting skills as a ???leg man,??? or fact gatherer. Among other events, he assisted with the coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the Rosenberg espionee case, and the arraignment of Puerto Rican nationalists in a shooting attack on Coneess. Married Joan (June) M. Sorrell in 1956, and upon finishing his bachelor???s degree at Catholic Uneersity, embarked on covering the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. Moved to New York City to continue a 25-year career with the Daily News, rising through the ranks of reporter to editorial maneement, becoming City Editor and theneetropolitan Editor. His leadership of award-winning reporters aneeditors at ???New York???s Picture Newspaper??? earned a 1974 Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting of Medicaid fraud. His coverage and supervision extended over city, politics, crime, aviation, law and labor related issues. Joined NY Telephone Co. in 1976, taking the position of Assistant Vice President-Public Relations, where he remained through several corporate mergers, and served various executive communications roles, until his retirement in 1994. His oversight extended to the execution of multi-million dollar advertising and philanthropic campaigns, as well as overall media relations strategy, corporate communications & philanthropic campaigns. Served as chairman of the James Gordoneennett Memorial Corp., a charitable foundation aiding newspaper employees and their dependents. Also served as secretary of the Roundabout Theatre Company, developing new fund raising campaigns; helped lead redevelopmeneefforts in Times Square; and served on the Board of Directors of St. Aneews Golf Club in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, helping negotiate a new partnership with the Jack Nicklaus golf course development group. Retired in Chapel Hill, NC, becoming a member of The Governor???s Club. He loved his large and still growing family, the great city he called home for most of his life, the neer-ending deadlines, the couneess Broadway shows, the Mets and Redskins in good times and bad, and all the great friends he made at work or on the golf course. A Eucharistic Liturgy will be offered at The Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill, NC on Friday, December 29th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike???s memory to the Carolina Meadows Gift and Remembrance Fund or a charity of your choice.
