Michael Reid Stepp

Chapel Hill, NC – Michael Reid Stepp, age 80, died peacefully at UNC Hospitals on November 6, 2022. He was born on November 25, 1941 to the late Otis Ernest and Flora Reid Stepp. Mike grew up in Canton, NC where he spent his summers working at the Champion Paper Mill and his father’s grocery store, Stepp’s Cash Grocery.

Mike attended North Carolina State University where he majored in Nuclear Engineering. He then attended graduate school at the University of California at Berkeley where he earned a Master of Science in Engineering and met his future wife, Gail Estell (Fregulia) Stepp. Mike worked for General Electric Nuclear Energy for 30 years in both San Jose, CA and Wilmington, NC, before retiring.

Mike is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gail, his brother Ernie Stepp and wife Myra, his son David Stepp and wife Lori, his daughter Rebecca Stepp Morgan and husband Chad, and his 5 grandchildren Jonathan Stepp, Hannah Stepp, Daniel Stepp, Carter Morgan and Reid Morgan.

Mike developed a passion for photography during his retirement, earning several awards for his images. He was also a proud grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He and his wife Gail were active members of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Durham, NC. Mike will be fondly remembered by friends and family as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend who brought wisdom, a sense of humor and joy to those around him.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at Church of the Good Shepherd in Durham, NC on Saturday, 26 November at 2:00 pm.
