MICHEL BOURGEOIS-GAVARDIN, 95, of The Forest at Duke Retirement Community in Durham, NC died Wednesday, July 24, 2013 following a brief illness. He was born neember 21, 1917 ineeguier, North Coast of Brittany, France and was the son of M. Maurice and Mme. Gabrielle Bourgeois-Gavardin. He grew up in Paris, France aneentered medical school at the Uneersity of Paris in 1938 and graduated in 1945. He served in the French Army during the occupation by German Troops and the Uneed States Army as a Lieutenant, serving in the medical corp. He attended McGill Uneersity in Quebec, Canada and practiced medicine for two years in Quebec and New York, specializing in Anesthesiology. He came to Duke Uneersity Medical Center in 1953 and served as an associate professor. In 1960, Dr. Bourgeois-Gavardin was appointed Chairman of the Anesthesia Department at Watts Hospital that became Durham Regional Hospital until 1982. He retired from practice in 1985. He is the author of more than 50 scientific articles in France, Canada and the Uneed States. He is predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Bettie Wright Bourgeois-Gavardin and daughter, Marguerite Bourgeois-Gavardin. He is survived by nephews: Richard W. Hawkins, William A. Hawkins III, James R. Hawkins, David Smith, and Charles Smith; nieces: Becky Martin, Cora Darrah and Mary H. Williams; brother-in-law: Charles Smith and sister-in-law: Mary W. Smith. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 12:30 pm at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, NC.
