Nancy Whaley

Nancy Whitney Whaley died January 28, 2009 in Duke Hospice care at her retirement home at Croasdaile Village in Durham. She was born 31 January 1928 in Adams, Massachusetts, the daughter of Elizabeth Dean Whitney and the Reverend Kenneth Lawson Whitney. She graduated from high school in 1946 in Morristown, New Jersey and from Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont in 1950. Nancy was retired after 40 years in the Department of Surgery at Duke Uneersity. Sadly predeceasing Nancy were her two sons, David Edward Whaley and Jonathan Michael Whaley. She is however survived by her grandson, David Michael Whaley, Chief Petty Officer, Uneed States Navy, serving in the Persian Gulf in USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71, and his wife Christy and her three great-grandchildren, Jordan, Natalie, and Kennedy, of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Nancy is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Jill Whaley Womble of Durham, her younger sister Joan Whitney Frey of Morristown, New Jersey, and her younger brother Kenneth L. Whitney Jr. of North Caldwell, New Jersey. After Nancy's mother died, she and her father, a retired Episcopal priest, lived together at Croasdaile Village, making Nancy, then past 70 herself, the only child living there. She took wonderful loving care of her parents in their latter years, first at their home in Manteo and then in Durham. Nancy was a long time member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Durham, and before that a member and choir member at St. Joseph's Episcopal Church in Durham. At St. Joseph's she made one of the needlepoint altar rail cushions still in use there. Nancy's funeral service will be a Requiem Eucharist, in St. Luke's Episcopal Church at 1737 Hillandale Road in Durham, at 2:00 PM oneebruary 4, 2009. Officiating will be the Reverend Joseph E. Heneey Jr. and the Reverend James B. Craven III. Following the service at St. Luke's Nancy will be buried at Maplewood Cemetery, next to her sons David and Jonathan.
