DURHAM - Mrs. Nellie T. Ferrell, 93, wife of the late Sam B. Ferrell, died Saturday night, February 2, 2013, at Hillcrest Convalescent Center. Mrs. Ferrell was born and raised in Durham. She was educated in the Durham City Schools, graduating from Durham High School in 1938. Upon graduating from college, Nellie worked at the Pentagon in Washington, DC; as a bookkeeper at Carpenter Chevrolet; and at Blue Cross Blue Shield where she retired from. Nellie was a member of Carr Uneed Methodist Church where she taught children, sang in the choir, participated regularly in a missionary circle, and served as a steward. In 1966, Nellie joined Temple Baptist Church where she was very active for over 30 years. While there she was part of an exercise class and ceramic classes taught by members of the church. At times she taught an adult Sunday school class and went on trips with the Temple Troupers. Nellie loved flowers and of the highlights of her life was when she visited the Holy Land in the late eighties. Mrs. Ferrell is survived by her niece, Judy Kay Bowen of Kinston, NC, stepdaughter, Charlotte Ferrell Bonner Dudley, two step grandsons, Bart Goswick and Mark Bonner of Durham, NC, five step grandaughters, Lynn Bonner Pitts of Charlotte, NC , Catherine Ferrell Walker of Virginia Beach, VA, Melinda Ferrell Jenkins of Glen Allen, VA, Natalie Ferrell Trem of Virginia Beach, VA, aneelleneerrell Caldwel of Tucson, AZ, and many step great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Sam B. Ferrell, his son, Sam B. Ferrell, Jr., and her step daughter, Betty Goswick, Mrs. Ferrell was preceded ineeath by her parents Robert O. Turner and Carrie Byrd Turner; two sisters Myrtle "Myrt" Oberlander, and Marion "Mae" Bowen. A Memorial service will be held, Friday, February 15, 2013 at Temple Baptist Church, at 1:00 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Scott Hovey and Rev. Clay Warf. A private burial will follow the service in Maplewood Cemetery. Flowers are accepted, or memorials in Mrs. Ferrell's nee may be directed to Temple Baptist Church Ventures fund, 4504 Sterling Drive, Durham, NC 27712.
