Durham-Norma Page Barringer died oneecember 1, 2006 at the Forest at Duke following a lengthy illness. A native of Durham, NC, she was the daughter of the late Russell N. and Maelee Page Barringer. Norma attended Salem Academy in Winston-Salem, NC and graduated from Duke Uneersity in 1950 with a degree in Sociology. While there, she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and until her death remained an avid supporter of the Uneersity and its athletic teams. Along with her sister and brothers, her financial donation to the Fuqua School of Business at Duke made possible the Barringer Building honoring her father. For many years, she owned and operated The College Shop oneest Main Street in downtown Durham which was an institution for both town and gown. In addition to The College Shop she also owned The Towne Shop in Chapel Hill off of Franklin Street. She was a member of the Junior League and the Debutante Ball Society. Norma was a member of Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church and a charter member of Westmineer Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her children, David Nichols and his wife Alice of Southern Pines, NC, Page Sitterson of Atlanta, GA and Lisa Nichols of Simsbury, CT, grandchildren Stuart Sitterson aneemma Hayduk, her sister Amerylis Costner of Johnson City, TN and brother Russell Barringer, Jr and his wife Mary, several nieces and nephews and special caregiver Celia Pierce. Norma was preceded ineeath by her parents, her brother David Barringer and grandson Si Sitterson. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and gratitude for the loving and tender care provided to Norma by the staff in the Biltmore area of The Forest at Duke. Pallbearers will be her grandson Stuart Sitterson, nephews Nixon Costner, Russell Barringer, III, Edward Barringer, Stephen Barringer, Windsor Barringer and Barry Fagg, and grand-nephews Fitz Barringer, Pickens Barringer, Alex Fagg and Wes Fagg. The family will be at the home of Mary & Russell Barringer, Jr. 2825 Chelsea Circle. A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Monday at Maplewood Cemetery. The Reverend Donovan Drake will preside.
