Norris Neil Porter passed away March 5, 2022. Mr. Porter was born in Cripple Creek, Virginia on November 19, 1926, son of the late Robert Stephen Porter and Blanche Spraker Porter of Cripple Creek. Mr. Porter served in the United States Navy in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters during World War II.
A graduate of National Business College in Roanoke, Virginia in 1950 with a degree in accounting and business administration, Mr. Porter joined Commercial Credit Corporation February 6, 1950. His career included service in Wytheville and Roanoke, Virginia and Bristol, Tennessee. He was assigned to the Durham Office in 1964 where he retired as Branch Manager in 1987. Mr. Porter was a licensed insurance agent and real estate broker in North Carolina for many years.
Mr. Porter was a member of Parkwood United Methodist Church, Durham, North Carolina. From 1979-1988, he was a member of the Durham County Planning and Zoning Board having served as chair for five of those years. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Life Member of the Ivanhoe, Virginia Blue Lodge for 70+ years. He was also a Shriner with membership in Amran Temple.
Married on March 31, 1950 to the late Frances Williams of Wytheville, Virginia, Mr. Porter had two daughters, Frances P. Barbour of Clayton, North Carolina and Virginia (Ginny) P. Bateman of Laurinburg, North Carolina.
Mr. Porter is survived by his second wife, Marie Fitzgerald Scearce Porter, whom he married August 18, 1973; his two daughters and sons-in-law, Frances and Victor Barbour and Virginia (Ginny) and Vincent Bateman; his stepson and daughter-in-law, Drewery Scott Scearce, III and Melanie R. Scearce, and four grandchildren (Ginna Bateman, Olivia Bateman, Taylor Scearce, and Cole Scearce). Also surviving are his sister, Sue P. Ayers of Wytheville, Virginia, and two brothers, Robert Porter of Mayodan, North Carolina and Jerry Porter and wife Linda of Cripple Creek, Virginia and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Porter was also preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Padgett and husband Earl, Carolyn Crockett and husband J.D., a brother, Bruce Porter, a sister-in-law, Barbara Priddy Porter, and a brother-in-law, Robert Ayers.
Mr. Porter loved his family and thoroughly enjoyed camping in Rural Retreat, Virginia with his siblings and their families Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. His favorite meal was breakfast at the camp site. His favorite pass time was sharing family stories around the camp fire.
A memorial service to celebrate his life followed by visitation will be held at Parkwood United Methodist Church, 5123 Revere Road, Durham, North Carolina on Saturday, March 19, 2022, at 1:30 pm by the Reverend Adam Benson and the Reverend Dr. James Baggett. Interment will be at West End Cemetery in Wytheville, Virginia at a time to be designated.
