-MEBANE- Olive Faucette Jenkins, age 69, of Efland, NC, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2016 at the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields ineebane, NC. She was born in Durham, NC in 1946 to the late Jay Edwin and Olive Faucette Jenkins. Olive grew up in Durham, graduating from Durham High School in 1964 and from Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC in 1968 where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in history. While at Salem, she began studying the harp. She attended the Salzedo Summer School for harp during the summers of 1967-69 where she studied with Alice Chalifaux, principal harpist of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. In 1972, she studied harp at the Salem Summer Session in Asolo, Italy. In 1973, she graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music, Cleveland, Ohio with a Bachelor of Music Degree in harp. She was a teaching fellow at the Institute. As a member of the Cleveland Institute Harp Ensemble under the direction of Alice Chalifaux, she performed on radio, television and with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. While in Cleveland, she was principal harpist with the Shaker Symphony and the Suburban Symphony Orchestras. She was employed by the State of North Carolina in the artist-ineesidence program under the auspices of the North Carolina Arts Council and the State Department of Community Colleges. As a member of the faculty in the Community Colleges with which she was affiliated, she served the entire surrounding communities, performing for classes, conducting lectures and demonstrations, giving recitals, and performing for civic organizations and church groups. She was a teacher at the Interlochen Summer School of Music in Interlochen, Michigan and later opened the Hillsborough Music School in Hillsborough, NC. She loved her career as a harpist, playing for weddings, funerals, churches, festivals and with orchestras, including the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra.Sadly, her career was cut short by the devastating illness of MS. She is remembered for her bravery, vivaciousness and positive attitude through the many years of living with a debilitating disease as well as for her love for music and the harp. She is survived by her loving sister, Anne Hallowell, extended family members and friends. A memorial service will be held 2:00pm Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Duke Memorial Uneed Methodist Church located at 504 West Chapel Hill Street, Durham, NC.
