Patricia Ann Thompson Mahoney, 85, passed away on March 16, 2019, at Duke Uneersity Hospital surrounded by family. Patricia Ann Burns was born on October 21, 1933, in Worcester, MA. She was the youngest of five children. She is predeceased by her father, Dr. Bernard J. Burns, her mother, Nora E. Burns, her sister, Elizabeth Burns Hennig, and sister Carolyn J. Burns. She is also predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Richard G. Thompson, and her second husband of six years, Edward L. Mahoney. Patricia graduated from Clark Uneersity in 1955. She was a school teacher for 40 years in six different states, making a difference in the lives of many children. Her longest tenee was teaching middle school mathematics at Northside Junior High School/Brentwood Middle School in Brentwood, TN. She received a Masters of Education from Tennessee State Uneersity in 1984. In 1985, she was need Williamson County Education Association Educator of the Year. She retired to Wilmington, NC where she lived for 21 years. She was an active member of the community and of the Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary. Known to her loved ones and grandchildren as ???Gabby,??? she had many hobbies and interests. When she was younger, she enjoyed tennis and gardening. With an eneepreneurial spirit, she started two small ventures based oneer hobbies. She loved spending time with family and friends, traveling and relaxing at the beach. She was exuberant, smart and had a quick sense of humor. She enjoyed playing cards and Scrabble and neer lost her desire to compete. ??Growing up in the Boston area, she rooted for the Red Sox and Celtics. She was an avid Duke basketball fan for 35 years. Patricia is survived by her son, Paul Thompson (Tami), of Cypress, TX; son, Mark Thompson (Robin), of Colorado Springs, CO, daughter Carole ThompsoneeVine (Robert) and six grandchildren: Scott and Kellie LeVine, Anna Thompson, and Patrick, Aneew, and Nick Thompson. She is also survived by her brother, Bernard J. Burns Jr., and sister, Eleanor Burns Kempton. In addition, she leaves behind 10 nieces and nephews. She will be very missed by all. A small memorial to celebrate her life will be scheduled at a later time. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Duke Cancer Institute or St. Jude Children???s Research?? Hospital.
