Durham, NC – Peggy Gooch Brown, age 90, passed away peacefully at Parkwood Nursing Home in Chapel Hill on April 8, 2024. She was born on April 19, 1933 to the late Floyd and Ruby Gooch.
A lifelong resident of Durham, Peggy met her husband Charles in 1950 and they began their 64 years of adventures together. They were dedicated members of Mt Moriah Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School to many generations of kids who all knew and loved her as Miss Peggy. She was also the neighborhood Avon lady, earning sales rewards every year for her outstanding performance.
Peggy was always busy piddling around the house, she liked to restore furniture and scrapbook, and lots of time was spent in the kitchen. She was an amazing cook, often you entered the house greeted by the smell of her famous fried cornbread. She would also bake everyone’s favorite cakes to help celebrate birthdays. Peggy and Charles spent a lot of time at Hyco Lake, where they enjoyed hosting both church friends and the grandkids. Peggy was a truly giving soul, she would deliver food, send handwritten notes, and she was a caretaker for several people during her life.
Peggy is survived by her three children, Debbie Brown, Eddie Brown (Becky), and Tommy Brown (Kelly); four grandchildren, Katie Brown, Evan Brown (Laurie), Stacey Brown-Garrett (JR), and Will Brown; 5 great-grandchildren, Austin, Landon, Carter, Holden, and Sawyer, and several nieces and nephews. Peggy was preceded in death by husband Charles Brown and brother Bobby Gooch.
Graveside service will be held on Wednesday April 17th at 2:00 pm in the afternoon at Mt Moriah Baptist Church in Durham. Officiating will be Rev. James L. Taylor.
The Brown family is under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
