Peregrina Catacutan Labay, M.D., 90, of Durham, died Thursday, August 2, 2012, at the Hock Family Pavilion of Duke Hospice in Durham, North Carolina. She was born in Apalit, Pampanga, Philippines on August 3, 1922 to Marta and Dionisio Catacutan. She is preceded ineeath by her parents, four sisters, a brother, and her husband, Gerardo Labay, M.D. Dr. Labay graduated from The Philippine Normal College to become an elementary school teacher. After a few years in elementary education, she pursued a medical degree and became a physician. She graduated from Uneersity of Santo Thomas Medical School in Manila, Philippines. Shortly after completing medical school, she became a faculty member and taught Anatomy at Far Eastern Uneersity Medical School also in Manila. She beganeer medical career as an obstetrician/gynecologist. She also started a clinic in Apalit, providing free medical care to the local community. Dr. Labay emigrated to the Uneed States in 1960, and completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis and a fellowship, also in physiatry at Albert Eineein College of Medicine/Jacobi Medical Center ineew York City, before being appointed assistant professor, and later associate professor of anatomy at Duke Uneersity School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina. In 1970, she was appointed assistant professor of genitourinary surgery and anatomy at Washington Uneersity Medical School-Barnes Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri, where she remained on the faculty up to her retirement. She wrote and co-authored neerous medical books and publications during her career. Dr. Labay is survived by her only daughter, Grace Rosalie Labay Anthony, a practicing attorney in Los Angeles, California, her grandson, James Michael Anthony of Columbia, Missouri, nephews, nieces and cousins both in the Uneed States and the Philippines. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish in Durham, North Carolina. A mass of Christian burial will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 810 West Chapel Hill Street Durham, NC 27701 oneednesday, August 8, 2012 at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Markham Memorial Gardens in Durham. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home, 1113 W. Main Street, Durham, NC 27701. A rosary will be said at 7:30 PM. The family would like to thank all of those who provided care and comfort to Dr. Labay and her family during this difficult time.
