Priscilla Grahame Walker Shows passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2023 after a long battle with cancer. She died peacefully surrounded by her family.
Priscilla leaves behind the love of her life, William Derek Shows of Durham, NC; two daughters, Elizabeth Shows Caffey of Atlanta, GA and Deanna Clarke (Greg) of Flower Mound, TX; and two sons, Dathan Shows (Julie) of Wilson, NC and Devon Shows of Pearland, TX. She also leaves behind seven granddaughters and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Sarah Risher.
She was born in Bethesda, Maryland on April 13, 1946 to John Grahame Walker and Marion Boss Walker. She was a graduate of Walt Whitman High School in 1964. She graduated from Georgia State with an undergraduate degree in Sociology and Psychology. After graduation, she was the Assistant Director of a Therapeutic Community at Dorothea Dix Hospital. Priscilla went on to receive her Masters in Social Work from UNC Chapel Hill. Priscilla worked at UNC Hospitals as a Medical Social Worker in the early 1980’s during the AIDS Epidemic with the Hemophiliac Department. She later went into private practice offering individual therapy. Priscilla was called on after the terrorist attacks on September 11th to report to the Pentagon where she and Derek provided mental health support to the staff and search and rescue teams. Priscilla served with her church as a leader for the Honduras Health Mission for ten years. She worked for ten days each year in the health clinics of the southern highlands of Honduras providing medical training for the local health promotors, sometimes seeing up to three hundred patients a day. After Derek retired, they moved to Fearrington Village where they spent ten years enjoying good food and better friendship. Priscilla served as Landscape Chairman for Fearrington Village and on the Board of the Democratic Club. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church of Durham, NC.
