Rachel Hurley Schrader

DURHAM - Rachel Hurley Schrader, beloved daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother passed peacefully on Friday evening, June 2, 2023.

Rachel was born in Burlington, NC in 1937 to Alton Thomas Hurley and Zola Pruitt Hurley. Raised in Danville, VA she graduated from George Washington High School and Averitt College. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Record Administration at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, where she enjoyed attending practice rounds of The Masters. She moved to Durham, NC where she built a distinguished career as Director of Medical Records at Watts Hospital and then Durham Regional Hospital before making the most of a well-earned retirement beginning in 1999.

She was a woman of great faith, who loved traveling at any chance possible and also cherished time spent with family and friends – especially holiday gatherings. She was always happy to go way above and beyond to make any situation better, but never sought effusive praise or gratitude. Rachel will be remembered for her caring spirit, generous nature, and unwavering optimistic view of life.

Rachel was preceded in death by her parents and loving husband of nearly 42 years George Schrader. She is survived by son Hurley and his wife Natalie of Cary, NC and by her twin granddaughters Grace and Lily Schrader. Grace and Lily were fortunate to inherit their grandmother’s beautiful red hair, radiant smile, and kind heart.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023 at 11:00 AM in Brier Creek Memorial Gardens. Pastor Charlie McNeill will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages a contribution to a favorite charity in loving and happy memory of Rachel.
