Dr. Richard C. Grambow, aged 88 years, passed away on January 27, 2022. A capable and generous man, he was a mentor and caregiver to all living things.
After growing up on a dairy farm in western New York, Dick pursued a degree in veterinary medicine at Cornell University. He ran his own small animal practice, Fairmount Animal Hospital, in Syracuse, NY for over 25 years and during this time was named the New York State Veterinarian of the year. He was a natural leader throughout his life. He served on the West Genesee School District Board of Education. He was president of the New York State Veterinary Medical Society and the North American Veterinary Conference. As a champion of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, he participated in many advisory councils, boards and faculty searches and was awarded both the Salmon Award for distinguished alumni service and an exemplary Cornell alumni service award.
Dick was a loving husband to Barbara for over 65 years, wonderful father to three daughters and their husbands (Debbie and John Kotecki, Bonnie and Scott Campbell and Nancy and Tim Brown) and fun grandpa to grandchildren (James (Emily) Kotecki, Michael (Alexandra Greco) Kotecki, Thomas Brown and Elizabeth Brown) and great-grandchildren (Max and Maya Kotecki). He is also survived by his brother Walter Grambow, two nieces and a nephew as well as many cousins.
Dick led an active life and travelled all over the world with Barbara. He taught his girls not only to downhill ski but also to water ski. He loved the lakeside life on both Otisco Lake and Skaneateles Lake in upstate NY and was always working in the yard. He had a particular penchant for roses and for many years he tended the rose bushes at the Croasdaile Village Retirement Community in Durham, NC where he lived.
A memorial celebration will be held on January 30, 2022 at the Croasdaile Village Chapel with burial in Ithaca, NY in the spring. Messages of condolence can be left with the Hall-Wynne Funeral home in Durham, NC (www.hallwynne.com )
