Durham, NC – Robert Gordon Christie, age 77, died at home on the morning of February 15, 2024. He was born on September 21, 1946 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to the late Robert Earl Christie and Jeannette Marcella Christie (Delainey). He was raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, with his two siblings Bonnie and Chris.
Robert graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a degree in electrical engineering. In 1968 after graduation, he moved to Montreal where he worked for Northern Electric. One day, walking home after work he met Patricia Glen. The two of them began dating after bonding over their shared interest in jazz music. They were married in June of 1970. Shortly afterwards, they moved to Brampton Ontario, and grew their family.
Bob was a huge fan of technology, cars, sports, music and history. He did extensive research into his family history, creating detailed genealogy books of the Christie family and other connected family lines. Growing up reading science fiction, he dreamed of space and robots, and he kept a close eye on the new industry of personal computers. He always brought home the newest computers, from Commodore, to Macintosh. Here he discovered spreadsheets. This became a tool he used to manage his life and capture unimaginable amounts of data—finances, sports, cars, travel, health, comparison shopping, genealogy, even all of his significant life events.
Bob will be remembered as a bedrock of emotional stability and for his exceptional pragmatism. He was known for his deep care and support for those he loved. He instilled a sense of self reliance and self confidence in his children, but was always there to provide help when needed. He encouraged others to follow their interests, and life will provide a path.
Robert is survived by wife Patricia Mary Louise Christie, sister Bonnie Meier, brother Chris Christie (Sharon), daughter Tara Christie, daughter Carey Christie (Dave Mullen), son Brett Christie (Katy Portier), son David Christie (Patricia J.), and eleven grandchildren.
A celebration of life is planned for Robert in September 2024, location TBD.
