Robert Murphy Thompson

Durham - Robert M. (Bob) Thompson, age 84, died at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham on July 1, 2023. He was born to the late Catherine Gooch Thompson and Thomas Murphy Thompson.

Bob grew up in Stem, NC and graduated from Stem High School in 1957. Bob served in the army for 39 months, with his last deployment in Augsburg, Germany. He completed his college degree at Methodist College in 1967 and returned to Durham shortly afterward. He attended Duke’s Chapel United Methodist Church, often teaching Sunday School and serving as a Lay Speaker. He is the author of the book Wisdom, Apples, and Black Roses. Bob enjoyed reading, listening to music, working in his puzzle books, and spending time on the back porch.

Bob is survived by his wife of 62 years Marianna Hobgood Thompson, his daughter Rhonda Skinner (Brian), his son Ryan Thompson (JoAnn), and his granddaughter Mary-Katherine Thompson. He is preceded in death by his mother, his father, and his brother Charles Edward Thompson.

The family will hold a visitation at 1:00pm, on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 in the fellowship hall of Duke’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Durham. The funeral service will take place in the church sanctuary at 2:00 pm, followed by burial at the church cemetery.
