Ruby Lucas Wheeler, age 91, died peacefully Friday evening, January 16, 2009 in Matthews, NC. She was born in Speed, NC to the late William Wilson and Frances Elizabeth Hyde Lucas on June 26, 1917. Mrs. Wheeler was a graduate of Speed High School aneeast Carolina Teacher's College. She taught school for 10 years and later worked as assistant registrar for the Durham Nurses Professional Registry until her retirement. A long-time member of Watts St. Baptist Church and the Johnson Bible Class, Mrs. Wheeler was a member of the Exchangette Club of Durham. She is survived by her son, Frank W. Wheeler and wife, Cathy, of Reidsville, NC; her daughter, Joyce Wheeler Hester and husband, Bill, of Charlotte, NC; her brother, Woodrow W. Lucas and wife, Mary, of Silver Springs, MD; and grandchildren: Wesley Wheeler and Christopher Wheeler, both of Greensboro, NC; Will Hester of Raleigh, NC; Josh Hester and wife, Gina, of Elgin, IL; and Matt Hester of Jacksonville, FL. Mrs. Wheeler was preceded ineeath by her husband, George Denny Wheeler, who died in 2000. Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Monday, January 19, 2009, from Watts St. Baptist Church with the Reverend Mel Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Gardens in Creedmoor. Friends may visit from 1:30-2:30 PM prior to the service on Monday in the church.
