S. Lee Nichols Upchurch, age 83, died Friday evening, February 15, 2008 at Hospice Home in High Point, NC. A Durham native, Mrs. Upchurch was born neember 10, 1924, to the late Owen B. and Sara Smith Nichols. A long-time member of Olive Branch Baptist Church, she graduated in the Class of 1946 from Women's College in Greensboro. After the death of her husband, Maj. Silas G. Upchurch, she went on to earn a Master's degree in Education at Duke Uneersity in 1970. Mrs. Upchurch retired in 1990 from the Durham County School System. She taught seventh-grade language arts and social studies at Neal Junior High, Hope Valley Elementary and Carrington Junior High Schools, and was very devoted to her students. Mrs. Upchurch is survived by her daughter, Leanne Rizzo and husband, Patrick, of Kernersville, NC; her grandson, John, of Kernersville; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded ineeath by her husband, Maj. Silas Gibbs Upchurch USAF, and her sister, Phyllis Nichols Williams. Graveside services will be held 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at Olive Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, 123 Olive Branch Rd. in Durham with the Rev. Boyd Lambert officiating. There will not be a scheduled visitation.
