Sara Hopkins Newton

Sara Hopkins Newton died Thursday at her residence in Greensboro. She was born August 14, 1922 in Camaguay, Cuba to Methodist Missionary parents, Sara Barr Hopkins and the Rev. Olmstead Key Hopkins. She lived in Cuba and attended schools there until high school graduation at age 17. She then came to the U.S. to attend Georgia State College for Women, Milledgeville, GA. After one year, she traneerred to Duke Uneersity where she majored in foreign languages. She was invited to be a member of the Spanish Honor Society and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Sara worked in the Duke library, where she met at Edward Traywick Newton, Jr. They were engaged ineecember, 1942 and married June 12, 1943. Sarah devoted most of her adult life to her children. Surviving are her husband, Edward Traywick Newton, Jr.; her children, Sara Louise Newtoneest and husband, Manley Jacksoneest, and Henry Hopkins Newton and wife, Alice Blair Newton; grandchildren, Tonya Yvonne West Daniel and husband, Roy Daniel, Sara Allysoneest, Tara Alyce Newton Parrish and husband, Derrick Parrish, and Sara Elizabeth Newton Knight and husband, John Knight; and great grandchildren, Christian Traywick Daniel, Michaela Savon Daniel, Ezekiel Patrick Daniel and Corbin Traywick Knight. Greeting Sara at heaven's gate is her soneedward Traywick Newton, III. Because of Sara's interest ineer children, she became active in the PTA. She served as a grade mother for 15 years, and as a band parent she took on the fund raising projects and served as a chaperone for band trips. Sara was a leader in First Baptist Church, where she served as president of the Women's Missionary Union, group leader for the Girls' Auxiliary, preschool Sunday school teacher for 30 years, and as a member of the Board of Finance, Pulpit Committee, Baptismal Committee and Communion Committee. In the community Sarah willingly served as a local voluneer for the Heart Fund, American Cancer Society and March of Dimes. She was a member of the Garden Club and the Pierian Club. Because of her knowledge of languages, she served as an interpreter for Cuban immigrants who came to Durham, so that they could take advantage of the city's resources. She also enjoyed spending time with the wives of the international students at Duke in order to integrate them into the community more easily. After her childreneeft home, Sarah went to work as an Administrative Assistant at Woodlawneemorial Park. Sarah always loved flowers and planted a variety each year. Ineer spare time, she along with Ed was a member of the bridge club and a dining club. Even in failing health her sweet spirit and positive outlook endeared her to those around her. Her deep faith assures all those left behind that she was enveloped in the arms of her Heavenly Father on Thursday. Sara's funeral will be 2:00 PM Monday from First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Aneew Davis officiating. Entombment will follow in Woodlawneemorial Park. Friends may visit 3-5 PM Sunday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
