DURHAM: Sharon Hammond McAlister, 49, died peacefully Thursday, May 28th in the Hock Family Pavilion-Duke Hospice following a struggle with breast cancer. She was borneebruary 9, 1960 in Durham. After graduation from Jordan High School, Sharoneent to Queens College in Charlotte, from where she graduated with a B.A. degree in English. She went on to pursue a career in marketing and public relations, later becoming a freelance writer. Sharon married David Warren McAlister in 1989. She and her husband spent most of their married life in Greenville, SC. At the time of her death Sharon was a Charlotte resident. Surviving are her parents, Peggy A. and Charles B. Hammond, M.D. of Durham; her brother, Charles B. Hammond, Jr. and wife, Ann, of Cedar Rapids, IA; and her nephews and niece, Charles B. Hammond, III, Katie and Oliver Hammond. Sharon's husband, David, died June 24, 2008 from Lou Gehrig's disease. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday in First Presbyterian Church, 305 E. Main St. Durham, with the Rev. Joseph S. Harvard, III officiating. The family will greet visitors following the service. Donations in Sharon's memory may be made to Duke Hospice or to the Joe Martin ALS Foundation, 100 N.
