Socorro Solis Castillo, age 89, died on December 7, 2023 at her residence. She was born on August 24, 1934 to the late Pedro Castillo and Rufina Solis Catillo.
Corina as fondly called by her peers, obtained a B.S. in Medical Technology at the University of Santo Thomas- The oldest extant university charter in Asia, located in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, where she was born and raised.
Corina pursued her dream of becoming a Medical Technologist and at the same time, working abroad, when she applied as an exchange student. She finished her internship and graduated from St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital School of Medical Technology in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA on October 15, 1967. She became a certified Medical Technologist with the ASCP in the same year.
As a fresh start on her career, Corina stayed and worked at St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital, her alma mater, Knoxville, from October 1968 to November 1969. She made her first move when she was hired by St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. That Would be her home for 12 years (November 1969 to April 1981).
Corina decided to make another move. This time, she headed to mainland USA, responding to being hired by Jefferson Hospital in Arkansas.
On September 16, 1982, Corina began her career as a part-time Medical Technologist at Duke Hospital in the Coagulation Laboratory. On March 21, 1983, she transferred to the Durham County Hospital.
Corina earned 46 years of devoted work in chosen endeavor. She dedicated 30 years to the Duke University Health System and its patients. During her time here, she had been an integral part of the laboratory team. She was a “Hematology Specialist” in her own way as she was one that others went to, to identify tough cells. As an individual, she was described as kind, loving, and generous.
She is survived by her sisters,Gloria Acob, and Lita Castillo of Durham. Brothers, Miguel, Vincente, and Manuel Castillo of the Philippines. Also surviving are nieces,nephews,grandnephews,grandnieces,great grandnieces and nephews
Corina is preceded in death by her sister, Julita Olimpo, brothers, Meynardo Castillo, Antonio Castillo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM on Friday, December 15, 2023, at St. Matthew Catholic Church with Fr. Robert Staley and Fr. Thanh Nguyen presiding. Burial will follow in St. Matthew Cemetery.
Friends may visit from 6:00 – 8:00pm on Thursday, December 14, 2023 in the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 W. Main Street, Durham, NC 27701
