Chapel Hill - Susan Gail Naumoff passed away peacefully on October 6, 2022 at age 78. She is survived by her son, Caleb Southern of Atlanta; her daughter, Genevieve Southern of Durham; two grandchildren, Stella Coleff and Max Coleff of Durham; and four siblings: Carolyn Lerner of Myrtle Beach; Lawrence Naumoff of Chapel Hill; Elizabeth McCarthy of Sarasota; and Deborah Flynn of Myrtle Beach.
Susan was born in Durham on December 28,1943 while her father, Dr. Philip Naumoff of Charlotte, served in World War II. She spent the first few years of her life in her maternal grandparents’ home on Markham Avenue along with her mother Esther Zuckerman Naumoff and her older sister Carolyn.
Susan grew up in Charlotte and graduated from Myers Park High School. She attended UNC-Greensboro (Women’s College) and then UNC-Chapel Hill. She believed in social progress and marched for Civil Rights in Greensboro in 1961.
Susan loved literature and books. She co-owned a graphic design business with her husband in the 1970s and 1980s. Susan later worked at the Regulator Bookshop and the Chapel Hill Public Library.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Friends of the Chapel Hill Public Library or the ACLU in Susan’s name.
