The Reverend Doctor June Daniels Hewitt, 95, passed away peacefully oneednesday, December 12, 2018, at her home in Durham, North Carolina. June was born on June 2, 1923 to the late John aneelsie Daniels, the middle of five children, and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She devoted her life to service of God, working first as a Deacon and then as an Elder in the Uneed Methodist Church with the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference. In 1979, she earned a Master???s of Divinity at Drew Theological Seminary ineew Jersey and was subsequently ordained as a minister in the Methodist church. She completed her Doctorate of Ministry at New York Theological Seminary in 1986, where her thesis was entitled ???Older Persons: Change, Enrichment and Hope.??? She went on to serve as pastor ineeveral New Jersey Uneed Methodist Churches, including Wesley UMC ineelleville, Bloomsbury UMC in Bloomsbury, and West Portal UMC ineest Portal. For the past 30 years she was a faithful parishioner at Resurrection UMC in Durham, where she found her forever church family and was known to all as ???Momma June.??? While at Resurrection, she served briefly as Interim Pastor, co-facilitated Disciple studies and bereavement groups, sang in the choir, helped serve Holy Communion, and sometimes led and participated in Sunday School classes. Most significantly, June was a pastoral counselor and devoted much of her energy oneealing ministry, where she deeply touched the lives of many, both within the church and the larger community. June had a perennial zest for life and loved all people she came to know. She loved visiting with friends and family, was a prolific writer and loved to read. Wheneer she could, she enjoyed conversing in Spanish with others. For June, every day was a celebration of life. June is predeceased by her husband of 74 years, Harvey G. Hewitt. She is survived by her daughters, Lynne Man, and husband Bruce, Donna Davis Wolsfeld, and husband, Ronald; son, Scott Hewitt, and wife, Mary; grandchildren, Todd, Erin, David, Lisa, Bryan, and Jarrett; great-grandchildren, Cash, Weston, Kienan, Graham, and Wyatt. In addition, June was preceded ineeath by her son, Mark Hewitt, who passed away in 1996. The memorial service will take place on Saturday, December 22, 2018, at 2:00 pm at Resurrection Uneed Methodist Church in Durham, 4705 Old Chapel Hill Road, Durham, NC 27707. A reception will follow. Pastor Jacqueline Trotter Dove will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate??June???s life.
