Thomas Burton Matthews, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away on September 25, 2024 in Granville County, North Carolina, at the age of 94. He was born on June 14, 1930, in Harnett County, North Carolina, to Matthew Tyson Matthews and Florine Connor Matthews.
A veteran of the United States Air Force, Thomas honored his country with dedicated military service, which he proudly carried with him throughout his life. After his service, he went on to work as a material handler at Nortel, where he earned respect and admiration from colleagues and peers alike for his diligence and reliability. Thomas's commitment to hard work was evident in both his professional and personal lives.
In addition to his career, Thomas held a strong focus on family values. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Irene Gregory Matthews, and he now joins his late brother, Robert "Bobby" Matthews, along with his sisters, Frances M. Powell and Jane Williford. He is also reunited with his grandson, Daniel Matthews and daughter-in-law Gail Gresham Matthews.
Thomas leaves behind a legacy of love and familial connections. He is survived by his sons, Eddie Matthews, Glenn and Donna Matthews, and Tony and Barbara Matthews. His cherished grandchildren include Christian Mayes, Jon Currin, Kimberly Currin, and David Matthews. The joy of his life also extends to his great-grandchildren: Emersyn Mayes, Austin Sullins, Natalie Sullins, Wyatt Sullins, Geneva Pritchett, Avery Currin, Alivia Matthews and Paisleigh Matthews. Additionally, he is survived by his sisters Joann Dewar and Larue Powell.
A visitation to honor Thomas's memory will be held on September 29, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM, both at the Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home located at 503 College Street, Oxford, NC, 27565.
