Velma Yarborough Burns, age 96, passed away Thursday, August 9th, 2012 at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville, VA for the past seveneears. Velma was born August 2, 1916 in Jonesboro, NC, the daughter of Neal B. and Joanna Cox Yarborough. She was pre-deceased by her husband Clayton Burns, sister Lois Y. Gregson, brother Henson Yarborough, and nephews James E. Gregson and Neal Gregson. She is survived by nephews Robert Gregson Mary Jo of Cookeville, TN, Larry Farrell Wandra of Pittsboro, NC, Stanley Long of Raleigh, NC, Jerry Long of Durham, NC, nieces Linda Smith Archie of Asheboro, NC and Jane Osborne William of Salisbury, NC, as well as other great nieces and nephews, her close friend Gladys Thomas and her family and the Jim Thomas family. Velma moved to Pittsboro from Cary in 1959, and was a long time member of Hanks Chapel Christian Church, singing in the choir as well as teaching Sunday school. After her husband's death, she relocated with her nephew, first to Wilmington, NC and then to Danville, VA. The funeral service will take place Friday, August 17th at 2pm at Hanks Chapel Christian Church with service conducted by Rev. Bob Wachs and Rev. William Rich. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. Online condolences may be sent to www.hallwynne.com, select Obituaries.
