Mrs. Virginia Champion Morton, age 86, of Oxford, NC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 26, 2022. She was the daughter of the late Sidney C. Champion, Sr and Helen Cash Champion and born in Granville County, NC on April 9, 1936. She thrived in a family of fourteen.
Virginia was a generous and kind woman, who never met a stranger and loved to get to know people. She met her late husband; James Taylor Morton and they were married for 57 years. Virginia retired from Yancey Chevrolet after 35 years. James opened a nursery and landscape business in 1974 and she became a full-time florist right beside him in 1984. She was a perfectionist and never let a floral piece leave the shop without her special touches and being the freshest possible. She had a special place in her heart for all her furry friends.
She is survived by her son, Keith Morton; her brothers, Clifton, Donald, Larry and Stephen Champion; her sisters, Faye Jones, Linda Fox and Betsy Lovings and many nieces and nephews, family and friends too numerous to names.
Virginia was predeceased by her parents; her husband, James Morton; her brothers, Sidney, Burley, Charles and Howard Champion; and her sisters, Erma Champion Reece and Pauline Champion Newell.
A graveside service will be held at Meadowview Memorial Park on Sunday, May 1, 2022, at 2:00 pm. Services will be officiated by Pastor Danny Lovings and Reverend Kevin Champion. A private cremation ceremony was previously held.
Flowers are welcomed or memorials may be made in Virginia’s memory to the ASPCA or your local animal shelter.
The Morton family is proudly being served by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home, 503 College St., Oxford, NC, 27565.
