Wanda H. Moore

January 24, 1925 — October 11, 2022

Durham - Mrs. Wanda O’Shinski Moore of Croasdaile Village retirement community passed away on October 11 at Duke Regional Hospital. She was born January 24, 1925 in Killarney, West Virginia to the late Michael and Mary Wagner O’Shinski. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Donald Blair Moore, who died July 31, 2012; two brothers, Henry John O’Shinski, wife Irene and Walter Joseph (Willie) O’Shinski, wife Julia, and her only sister, Jennie Regina O’Shinski Moore, husband William. She was also predeceased by nieces Mary Ann O’Shinski Goodwin and Jacqueline Bratcher Pierce.


She is survived by nephew, Robert E. Bratcher, Jr. and wife Miriam of Durham N.C. and great nieces and nephews: Michael Goodwin, Kathy Givens, Christy Carleton and Mary Wernette, Robert E. Bratcher III, Robert T. Pierce and Ryan C. Pierce.

Mrs. Moore attended Bluefield College in Bluefield, Virginia. She was a graduate of Concord College in Athens, West Virginia, and Duke University in Durham, NC and completed further studies at Oregon State, Michigan State and West Virginia University.


Mrs. Moore enjoyed a long and personally rewarding career as a teacher and administrator in higher education. She felt that it was a privilege to help educate and to prepare students for productive lives. She was a teacher at Bluefield High School and Crestview in Columbus, Ohio. In 1965, she began her tenure at Bluefield State College until she resigned in 1985. During those years she served as associate professor, Dean of Women, Associate Dean of Women and Director of the Regent Bachelors of Arts Degree Program, and was awarded Administrator Emeritus.


Active in professional and civic organizations in Bluefield, she served on the Board of Directors of the Mercer County Center of Economic Action, the American Red Cross, the United Way and Quota and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She was listed in the National Register of Prominent Americans and International Notables and Outstanding Educators of America. She is a member of the United Methodist Church of Bluefield, Virginia and served on the Administrative Board.


A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, October 29, at Few Chapel, Croasdaile Village. The service will be officiated by Chaplain Laurie Hays Coffman. Future interment will held at the Mausoleum Chapel of Grandview Memorial Gardens in Bluefield, Virginia.


The family expresses their gratitude to Wanda’s caregivers Latisha and Princess Lawrence and Denice Rice.
