Oxford
Warren Edward Hicks, age 54, died on August 29, 2021, at his home. He was born on July 27, 1967, to his late parents Wilbur Lee Hicks and Phoebe Burnette Hicks.
Warren was born and lived in Granville County, just outside of Oxford for most of his life. He worked on his family’s tobacco farm for many years growing up and enjoyed playing baseball in several church and city leagues. He graduated from Webb High School in 1985 and obtained his Associate of Arts Degree from Vance Granville Community College in 1987. He then transferred to The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication in 1990. While at UNC, Warren served an internship at WRAL-TV 5 in Raleigh with Tom Suiter’s “Football Friday”.
After college, Warren went to work at the Cary Police Department as a 9-1-1 Emergency Telecommunicator, a career that took him to Granville County Emergency Communications and the Durham Police Department. He attended Basic Law Enforcement Training in 1997 and became a Police Officer with the Henderson Police Department. Later he went back home to Oxford and served as a Patrol Officer, Squad Corporal, Evidence Technician and Crime Scene Investigator.
He served Granville County for 18 years as a volunteer firefighter; serving in Providence, Granville Rural and Oxford Fire Departments. Warren was a member of Oxford United Methodist Church for over 50 years, singing in the Chancel Choir and contributing to the Methodist Men’s Club. He attended Sunday School and served in multiple positions within the church, helping wherever he was able.
Warren enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, yard work, photographing nature, deer watching, farming, and gardening. He was an avid, true blue UNC Tar Heel fan and memorabilia collector, as well as a dedicated high school football supporter and Durham Bull’s fan.
Warren is survived by his daughter, Kristin Elaine Hicks of Oxford; his sister, Catherine Hicks Smith (Chris) of Youngsville; his brother, Darryl Lee Hicks (Allison) of Oxford and his nephews, Samuel Smith and Caleb Hicks. He will be greatly missed by his long-time girlfriend, Diane Proctor, and many friends and family too numerous to name.
A memorial service will be held on September 2, 2021, at Oxford United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm and officiated by Pastor Jenny Wilson and Pastor David Haley. Visitation will be held in the Fellowship Hall from 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm on the same day. Burial of cremains to follow service at Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his honor to Oxford United Methodist Church.
