William Alfred Stapleford, age 89, died peacefully Friday morning, March 27, 2009 at Carver Living Center surrounded by his family. He was born in Raleigh to the late Cassius Clay and Lula Morgan Stapleford on neember 13, 1919. Bill was a 1937 graduate of Durham High School and a long-time member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Following graduation from high school, Bill moved to New York City where he was employed by Sperry Gyroscope and attended Pratt Institute. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war he was a member of the 7th Regiment National Guard, NYC. During this time he met and married his wife, "Ginee". The family moved back to Durham where he was employed by Wright Machinery Company. Bill was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Durham Engineers Club, and for years with Ginee delivered Meals on Wheels. Bill is survived by his loving daughters: Kitty Stapleford of Durham; Molly Derick and husband, Skip, of Fairfax, VA; and his granddaughter, Morganeerick. He was preceded ineeath by his wife, Virginia R. Stapleford; his brothers: Carvel C. Stapleford; John M. Stapleford; Robert W. Stapleford; and his sisters: Anne S. Thompson and Marguerite Trotter. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 30, 2009 from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Dan McLellan, OFM, presiding. Friends may visit with the family prior to the Mass on Monday from 10:00-11:00 AM in the church. A reception for all attenees will be held after Mass in the gathering space.
