William Arthur Martineed.D., died early Wednesday morning at Durham Regional Hospital. Dr. Martin was born in Machipongo, VA to the late Frank Davis and Lillian Stevens Martin on neember 26, 1922. Dr. Martin proudly served his country while stationed in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hornet. He graduated from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Apprentice School. Dr. Martin earned his B.S. degree in Industrial Education and Masters of Education from North Carolina State Uneersity and his Doctor of Education from Duke Uneersity. He served as the first president of what is now Central Carolina Community College in Sanford and Dean of Instruction and Special Assistant to the President at Durham Technical Community College. Dr. Martin was a member of Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church and the George Watts Sunday school class. He was a member of the Durham Lions Club and the NC Retired Governmeneemployees Association. Dr. Martin was an avid Wolfpack fan and member of the Alumni Associations of both NCSU and Duke Uneersity. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Willis Ann McLeod Martin of Durham; his three children: William Arthur Martin, Jr., and wife, Lisa, of Holly Springs, NC; John McLeod Martin and wife, Margaret, of Wilmington, NC; and Margaret M. Bartholomew and husband, Steve, of Garner, NC; his sister, Lillian M. Lee of Front Royal, VA; his brother, Edward Leslie Martin of Newport News, VA; and six loving grandchildren. Graveside services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, February 11, in the Euphronia Presbyterian Churchyard in Sanford, NC. The Rev. Dr. Donovan Drake and Rev. Graham McChesney will preside. A memorial service will follow at 2PM Saturday at Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church in Durham. The family will greet friends following the service in the church.
