William Carter Livingston

April 2, 1943 — May 26, 2023

William Carter (“Bill”) Livingston of Durham, N.C. departed this life on May 26, 2023, from Lewy Body Disease. He was born on April 2, 1943 in Staunton, Virginia and grew up in Hampton, Virginia. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnical University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked for many years as an engineer first at Proctor and Gamble Co., then at Burroughs Wellcome Co., and finally at Stanford White Engineers before retiring. He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church. 


Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William John Bryant and Sarah Carter Livingston and by his sister, Elizabeth Pence Warren. He is survived by his wife Nancy, his children Michael Livingston (Christine), David Livingston (Pamela), Ridgley Livingston, Carter Butts (Rachel Martin), and Lauren Formy-Duval (Michael), six grandchildren, and his sister and brother-in-law Sarah and Lee Brown. 


In addition to his Durham home, Bill valued spending time with friends at his home on the Neuse River in Pamlico County, where he was an avid sailor and windsurfer. 


The family will have a visitation at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 31 from 6:00-8:00. Condolences may be sent to Hall-Wynne Funeral Home, 1113 West Main St., Durham, NC 27701. A graveside service and burial will take place in Pamlico County. 


The family would like to express our appreciation to Transitions Life Services and deep gratitude to Bill’s caregivers whose devoted and thoughtful care brightened his days and calmed his nights.
